Eight Divine Formulas and Seven Harmful Things

These eight divine formulas must be adopted in life to make it great.

(1) Peaceful Nature: O my children! Learn to be peaceful. Chant O…….m…… and be quiet for an equal time afterwards. Meditate like this for 10-15 minutes and then see how you become inspired with noble virtues and thoughts, and spread them. The divine virtue of being calm will increase your memory power, might and give many other benefits too. So cultivate the virtues of calm and concentration. तपःसु सर्वेषु एकाग्रता परं तपः । Concentration has been considered the highest of all austerities.

(2) Devotion to truth: Speaking the truth is very beneficial. Falsehood, fraud and dishonesty seem to work for a short time, but eventually it lands one in utter sorrow. Truth in practice pleases God quickly and brings success in Bhakti, Yoga and Jnana. It purifies the mind quickly.

साँच बराबर तप नहीं, झूठ बराबर पाप ।

जाके हिरदै साँच है, ताके हिरदै आप ।।

“There is no penance greater than Truth. There is no sin equal to deceit. The one who has a truthful heart, in that heart God himself resides.”

The truthfulness of Gandhiji is emitting fragrance even now.

(3) Enthusiasm: Do every single act zealously and diligently, not carelessly. Doing work zealously enhances the efficiency of the doer and gives joy. Doing work without enthusiasm turns it into a burden.

(4) Patience: One whose heart is saturated with patience and right knowledge does not become sad in trivial matters. Even during the gravest ups and downs in his life, he does not become as overwhelmed with them as those without a Guru would become. Even if he fails, he does not get frustrated, instead he finds the cause of failure; discards it and diligently engages again in the attainment of lofty goal.

(5) Evenness of mind: Equanimity is the greatest virtue. One should try his best to stay calm and unaffected even in adverse conditions. Practice keeping your mind even in pain and pleasure.

(6) Courage: Be courageous. You can do anything. Discard negative thoughts. Focus on that one aim (attaining Self-realization) and success will be ready to become your maid-servant.

(7) Humility: A modest person gets relieved of big predicaments and afflictions and also leaves his impression on other’s hearts. Humility makes a person great, but this does not mean one should salute evildoers, cunning persons and thugs. One should have sagacity how and where to show modesty.

(8) Tolerance: One should increase his tolerance. If mother says something bitter, let it go, after all she is mother. If father or teacher scolds, do not sulk. Do not be agitated. Be patient.

Seven extremely harmful things:

(1) Loquaciousness: Do not talk a great deal. Be laconic and speak succinctly.

(2) Wandering aimlessly: One who wanders or jests much harms himself.

(3) Oversleeping: One who oversleeps or sleeps during the day, also suffers great harm.

(4) Gluttony: One, who frequently consumes a great deal of food or eats just for the pleasure of eating, impairs his digestion and becomes lazy.

(5) Make-up and dressing: Those, who embellish the body overly, indulge in fashionable make up, read racy books (pornography) and associate with such people, become unrestrained, and thereby cause great harm to themselves.

(6) Inferiority complex: One who curses himself with the thoughts like – “I am poor; none is there for me, I can’t do anything in life.” such a person lags in making progress. The source of infinite Power, the Supreme Self is within you as your inner self. The person who calls out to Him and makes effort becomes great. Even average frustrated students in the olden days, made self-efforts and attained great success. If we write down the stories of such mediocre persons who became great, countless pages would be required.

(7) Egoism: One who is haughty about his wealth, intellect or abilities does not achieve great heights in life. Such a person destroys his achievements like Ravana. But Lord Rama, having attained the proximity of Sage Vasishtha, spoke succinctly, giving respect to others while being humble himself. Rising from sleep in the morning he would do meditation. He would bow His head to His parents and Guru. He never tried to demean anybody. He did not practice duplicity or deception. He kept egoism and pride at bay. Know Lord Rama, the mine of Infinite qualities; do not be arrogant and proud. - Pujya Sant Shri AsharamJi Bapu
