I don’t want to win a victory based on untruth

This incident is of the time when Shri Gopalaswarupa Pathak was an advocate in Allahabad High Court. He had received inspiration from his mentor Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviyaji that he will never tell a lie and will never cheat anyone.

Once, Pathakji was consulted regarding a property dispute. He asked his client for the documents. His client said that he will give the documents shortly. Shri Gopalaji argued strongly in support of his client in front of the judge. After agreeing with his argument the judge wrote the decision
in favour of Shri Pathakji but he would announce the judgement the next day.

The client arrived at Pathakji’s residence with a packet of sweets and a gift. While talking, the client blurted out that the documents were forged. On hearing these words Pathakji went to the judge and said: “Sir! I have misguided the court erroneously. I do not want to win the case based on untruth. Please change your judgement.”

The Judge was astonished to see the truthfulness in practice of this unique lawyer.

What a truth loving advocate! He believed it was immoral and unrighteous to punish an innocent person on the basis of false arguments. He never pleaded for any unjust case being lured by money. It was the good fortune of India that such a truthful person later on became a
glorious Vice President of this country.
